On Wednesday September 8th Abbotsleigh Niger aka "Shelby" ran his first field trial and for me it was the first run since January 2020! Last season I judged some early field trials, but never got a run due to the second lockdown. I was great to be out and about again after the past 18 very strange months.
The novice stake for 16 dogs was organised by the South West Scotland Gundog Association at the amazing Drumlanrig Estate by permission of The Duke of Buccleuch.
It was a hard trial due to the grounds with thick bracken and the unusual hot weather. It was my first time in Scotland with 25 degrees!
Shelby picked a very nice runner in thick bracken as a second dog down and showed beautiful work during a dry run on a very long wing tipped partridge for which he was awarded the Jimmy Blair Glassware for Best Hunter.
Well done Kevin Haynes on your first place.
