In his first season, Shelby was very consistent, running very well in his first ever trial. At this novice trial of the South West of Scotland Gundog Association held at Drumlanig estate, Shelby made the end of the trial and received Jimmy Blair trophy for the best hunting dog after a nice retrieve on a running partridge.

​

He then went on winning his first open trial in Belgium, followed by another win and a second. Making him up Belgian Field trial champion in his first season and qualifying him for the Belgian Championship.
